NAPU had its beginnings as an alliance of concerned staff from universities across the Sydney region. We are looking to build that alliance so we can strengthen opposition to a deregulation of the university sector.

If you’d like to join us in opposing the Abbott government’s proposed deregulation please email NAPU and we will keep you up to date with news, events and actions in support of public universities.

You can also volunteer to help us! We’re an alliance of people with a common belief in public universities.

The National Alliance for Public Universities is a not-for-profit organisation.

  1. Education is a basic human right and all education should be free. Free university education has been adopted by about 20 variously rich or poor countries for all or a substantial proportion of their university students. However the Anglosphere countries (the UK, the US, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand) ) are peculiar in imposing a huge and unjust education debt on university students as well as imposing a huge and inescapable Carbon Debt on young people through disproportionately huge greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution. However Accredited Remote Learning (ARL) via Free Universities (FUs) (e.g. an Australian Free University) can circumvent this pro-One Percenter, neoliberal perversion – see Gideon Polya, “Free University Education Via Accredited Remote Learning – All Education Should Be Free For All”, Countercurrents, 31 January, 2016: and the website “Free University Education”: .
